11 Million Program Fights Alzheimer’s in Native Communities

American Indian and Alaska Native communities face higher risks of Alzheimer’s. A new $11 million program aims to change that.

Led by Dr. Dedra Buchwald from UW Medicine, the program will train doctors and nurses to identify early symptoms of dementia. They’ll also learn how to manage dementia and support patients’ families. The program, funded by the Indian Health Service, will focus on healthcare providers in rural reservations and urban areas.

The program offers hope for communities with limited access to care. Trainees will learn to detect Alzheimer’s early and prevent its progression. They’ll also be trained to recognize other conditions that mimic dementia, like vision and hearing loss.

New Dementia Training Program Aims to Improve Alzheimer’s Care for Native Elders

This effort is crucial because Native elders are especially vulnerable to Alzheimer’s due to other risk factors like diabetes and social isolation. By 2050, the number of Native elders with dementia could quadruple. This program is a necessary step toward addressing these gaps in healthcare.

With this training, healthcare providers can deliver culturally appropriate care and reduce the stigma around dementia in Native communities.
