Stable resources create the foundation for lasting wellness in our communities.

Permanent Funding Security

A critical funding package signed on February 3, 2026, finally provides advance appropriations for the IHS through the end of fiscal year 2026. This legislative victory ensures Tribal Continuity of Care programs remain operational and immune to potential federal shutdowns, guaranteeing our children and elders are seen without interruption. We are moving beyond survival mode into an era where administrative delays no longer dictate patient outcomes or facility staffing levels.

Newborn Screening and Data Justice Protections

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. recently added degenerative diseases like DMD and MLD to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel, targeting higher prevalence rates in nations such as the Navajo to ensure early intervention. Simultaneously, 2026 initiatives are mitigating epidemiological data bias by building datasets that prevent misdiagnosis in rural Indigenous populations. These parallel efforts ensure our medical technologies and screening protocols reflect the specific biological needs of Native people rather than excluding them from the narrative of modern medicine.

Native Hearts Initiative Strengthens Our Pulse

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the IHS marks the second anniversary of its National Native Hearts Clinical Strategic Initiative. This data-driven program was designed to improve cardiovascular outcomes across Indian Country, where heart disease mortality rates remain 20% higher than the general population. Expanding its reach, the initiative recently welcomed the Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital and the Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa as pilot teams. These sites will implement evidence-based guidelines to better manage heart failure and hypertension.
