The Indian Health Service has handed full ownership of the Alaska Native Medical Center to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, closing a chapter Native leaders have pursued for decades.
A Historic Handoff in Anchorage
The transfer became official on August 24, 2026, according to reporting by Yereth Rosen for Alaska Beacon, ending federal title to Alaska’s second largest hospital and placing it fully in the hands of the consortium that has operated it since it opened in 1997. ANTHC President Natasha Singh called it a milestone that “advances tribal self-determination in healthcare,” while Ahtna shareholder Wilson Justin, quoted by Rachel Cassandra of Alaska Public Media, said Native people had waited “half a generation” for the deed to change hands.
Why Ownership Matters for Indian Country
Ownership opens tribal-facility-only funding streams for maintenance and renovation that a federally titled hospital could not access, on top of a $400 million federal settlement and $462 million in board-approved improvements already committed to the campus, as Alaska’s News Source reported. The Indian Health Service still owns Kanakanak Hospital, Maniilaq Health Center, Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center, and Norton Sound Regional Hospital, so ANMC now stands as a working model for other tribal health organizations weighing a similar transfer under their own self-governance compacts.
What Tribal Health Leaders Should Watch Next
Ellsworth has staffed clinicians into Tribal 638 facilities long enough to know that ownership changes ripple into hiring authority, capital planning, and how quickly a facility can modernize care for elders and Our Relatives. A hospital that controls its own deed can move faster on the renovations culturally competent care requires. Tribal health leaders elsewhere should study how ANTHC structured its ownership request, since it offers a real path for facilities still waiting on federal title. Ellsworth stands ready to help Native-owned health organizations staff that next chapter!
