Buy Indian Industry Day helps Native-owned healthcare staffing companies prepare for federal opportunities by connecting them with acquisition staff and clarifying what agencies need to purchase.
Buy Indian Industry Day Connects Businesses With Buyers
The 2024 HHS and Department of the Interior event was held May 15 at Gateway Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, followed by virtual matchmaking on May 16. IHS reported more than 200 participants and another 100 online attendees. The event supported the agency’s fiscal year 2024 goal of directing at least 25 percent of small business eligible dollars to Native-owned small businesses. That was a procurement target, not a reported spending result. For healthcare contractors, the lasting value is access to the people who define requirements and manage acquisitions.
Prepare for Eligibility and Facility Requirements
Federal Buy Indian rules direct IHS contracting officers to prioritize Indian Small Business Economic Enterprises, or ISBEEs, to the maximum extent possible. Eligibility must be supported by the required representation and applicable ownership, control, and small business criteria. A Unique Entity ID identifies a business but does not establish ISBEE eligibility. Before meeting agency staff, prepare a capability statement covering clinical specialties, service locations, credential verification, and relevant past performance. Ask about anticipated acquisition schedules and technical requirements, then monitor official notices for the actual solicitation, amendments, and submission deadlines.
Turn Agency Conversations Into Staffing Plans
Ellsworth’s May 2024 Industry Day account emphasized opportunity research, procurement forecasts, and meetings with contracting and program staff. Our perspective is that useful follow-up should turn those conversations into a specific understanding of facility needs. For healthcare staffing, that means discussing shifts, onboarding, housing, supervision, and replacement coverage before proposing a solution. Record a contact and follow-up date. Cultural awareness should be shaped by the Tribal nation and facility, with clear expectations for clinicians serving Native communities.
