Health professions students who want paid, hands-on experience in Indian Country should circle November 2, 2026, on their calendars!

The IHS Extern Program Pays Students to Train Inside Native Health Facilities

The Summer 2027 application for the IHS Extern Program is anticipated to open November 2, 2026, on USAJOBS, with the direct link posted on the program page once available. IHS scholarship recipients and other qualified students are offered a hands-on experience that complements their schooling, and externs are employed for 30 to 120 workdays per calendar year during non-academic periods. Externs are paid a salary based on experience and years of academic training. However, IHS waives that salary if the externship fulfills a required academic field placement or internship, so students should ask their school how credit and pay interact.

Eligible disciplines are listed in a chart on the IHS page and below, and past cycles have included sophomore pre-nursing and junior or senior pre-medicine students.

Five November Information Sessions Give Applicants a Head Start

IHS has scheduled virtual information sessions on November 5, 12, 17, 23, and 30, spread across afternoon and evening hours in Central time, with Microsoft Teams links posted on the program page. One session is enough to ask about supervision, expected duties, duty stations, and timelines. Housing deserves early attention.

Externs are responsible for securing their own housing, though host sites may be able to share resources for finding options in the community. Rural rentals near Indigenous communities can be scarce, so call the host site as soon as a placement is offered. Learn about the Tribal nations served by that facility before arriving. Listen closely to elders, local colleagues, and patients.

A Simple Checklist Helps Students Apply Before Spots Fill

Build or update a USAJOBS profile now, and write a federal-style resume that lists hours worked per week. In a recent listing, applicants were required to submit transcripts or a list of courses with titles, credit hours, and grades, and unofficial transcripts were accepted. Meet with an academic advisor this month. Related programs are worth sharing too.

The IHS environmental health extern program employs 5 to 15 externs each year at roughly $3,000 a month, with a civil service application window running November through March. Third-year dental students can apply to the IHS Dental Externship Program, where placements last two to four weeks and the application window runs January 1 through February 28.
