Sepsis care in Indian Country is getting a three-year, $7.5 million push from AHRQ and IHS, and its success will depend on frontline teams who are staffed, trained, and given time to recognize and treat sepsis early.
What the AHRQ and IHS Sepsis Partnership Will Build
On October 27, 2026, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality announced a partnership with the Indian Health Service to strengthen sepsis care in IHS emergency care facilities. AHRQ is committing $7.5 million over three years for an educational toolkit available IHS-wide, plus evaluation at participating sites. The agencies say the work follows three years of consultation with American Indian and Alaska Native communities and reflects their cultural values and traditions. Many of these facilities are rural or remote, with limited access to specialty expertise.
Why Sepsis Care in Indian Country Needs Attention Now
Sepsis moves fast, and Native communities have carried a heavier burden. In the American Journal of Public Health, James E. Cheek and colleagues reported septicemia death rates of 19.1 per 100,000 for American Indian and Alaska Native people in IHS service delivery area counties from 1999 to 2009, compared with 8.4 for White people. The CDC Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements recommend physician and nurse co-leaders, dedicated program time, and sepsis training at onboarding and every year. CDC also lists adequate staffing among the factors critical to delivering recommended sepsis practices.
How Tribal Health Leaders Can Prepare Their Teams
Leaders should name sepsis champions now, protect their time, and build the coming toolkit into orientation for every clinician, including travel nurses and locum providers, then track sepsis recognition and outcomes as CDC advises.
Ellsworth, a Native-owned healthcare staffing company serving IHS, Tribal and 638, and rural facilities, believes onboarding is where a new clinician learns local escalation paths and transfer options.
When your emergency department needs coverage, Ellsworth can help place clinicians ready to follow your sepsis protocols and care for Our Relatives with skill and respect.
