Lung cancer screening in Indian Country works best when Tribal clinics pair low-dose CT access with trained navigators who guide Our Relatives from the first eligibility check to the scan and every follow-up result.
Who Qualifies for Lung Cancer Screening Today
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force lung cancer screening recommendation, issued in March 2021, calls for annual low-dose CT for adults ages 50 to 80 with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history who still smoke or quit within the past 15 years. That guidance carries weight in Native communities, where CDC reports that 27.1% of American Indian and Alaska Native adults smoked cigarettes in 2020. Finding eligible elders starts with an accurate commercial tobacco history at every primary care visit. Leaders can build that question into intake workflows and patient reminder lists.
Distance and Follow-Up Shape Who Gets Screened
Access is uneven. A 2022 ARRS study by Miguel Pena and colleagues found 76.4% of 594 American Indian and Alaska Native populations had a screening center within 200 miles, and the nearest averaged 43.6 miles away. Only 26.9% of those nearest centers held American College of Radiology accreditation. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is now testing tailored patient navigation in the SACRED LUNGS trial with Muckleshoot and South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency partners. Screening succeeds when someone schedules the scan, arranges the ride, and tracks the result.
How Ellsworth Supports Screening Teams
Ellsworth is a Native-owned healthcare staffing company serving IHS, Tribal and 638, and rural facilities. We see lung screening as team work shared by radiologic technologists, nurses, care coordinators, and primary care clinicians who bring culturally competent care to each visit. Steady coverage matters because one missed shift can delay a scan, a result call, or a referral. If your facility is building or expanding a screening program, talk with Ellsworth about the clinical staffing that keeps every patient moving toward answers.
Lung cancer screening works best when it starts close to home. Eligible adults ages 50 to 80 with a heavy smoking history can get a yearly low-dose CT, and navigators help Our Relatives reach the scan and the results. #LungCancerScreening #NativeHealth #IndianCountry #TribalHealth #IHS #IndigenousHealth #Ellsworth
A 2022 study found the nearest lung cancer screening center averaged 43.6 miles from American Indian and Alaska Native populations that had one within 200 miles. For Tribal clinics, trained navigators and steady clinical staffing can turn eligibility into completed scans and timely follow-up.
