Tuba City staff housing addresses a practical barrier to clinician recruitment and retention by giving healthcare workers a place to live near their jobs.
Staff Housing Adds 48 Units
Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation held the Blue Canyon Apartments grand opening on January 30, 2026, according to its February 10 announcement. The housing campus was designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers at the main campus in Tuba City, Arizona. Navajo Times reported that construction began in August 2024. The practical workforce lesson is to plan places to live alongside the positions a facility intends to fill. A staffing forecast should therefore include expected housing demand. Recruiters can then explain housing options early, helping candidates assess relocation before accepting an assignment.
Housing Should Be Part of Workforce Planning
In a 2018 review of Indian Health Service provider vacancies, the Government Accountability Office identified insufficient housing and rural locations as recruitment challenges reported by IHS officials. That finding helps explain why Tribal health leaders should include housing in workforce planning. Before advertising a position, confirm availability, rent, deposits, utilities, transportation, and lease terms. Include a housing contact in each candidate’s written assignment information. Permanent employees and clinicians accepting temporary assignments may need different arrangements. Leaders should track offer acceptance, time to start, assignment completion, and employee retention to assess how housing investments support staffing goals over time.
Ellsworth Connects Housing Readiness With Staffing
Ellsworth CEO Michael Woestehoff was born in Tuba City, giving this project a personal connection to the company’s commitment to Indian Country. Our perspective is that housing readiness belongs in the same conversation as credentials, scheduling, and onboarding. A clinician should know the living arrangements before committing to a rural assignment. Cultural awareness and orientation should reflect the specific Tribal nation and facility, supporting respectful care for Native communities.
